Angi vs SEO for pest control: which actually builds your business?

Angi vs SEO for pest control: which actually builds your business?

Angi is one of the first places pest control companies turn for leads. It is fast and it works without you having to rank for anything. So how does it stack up against building your own SEO? Here is the view from a pest control owner’s chair.

A quick bit of history: Angie’s List and HomeAdvisor merged in 2017, and Angie’s List changed its name to Angi in 2021 (Wikipedia). HomeAdvisor’s pro side is now called Angi Leads, so much of what follows applies to both.

Note: marketplace pricing and policies change. The figures here were checked in October 2026. Confirm current terms with Angi before you sign up.

How each one works

Angi is a marketplace. Homeowners submit a request, and Angi sells that lead to service pros. With a Market Match lead, Angi sends the request to up to four pros. With an Exact Match lead, the homeowner picks which pros to contact. Speed is the selling point: you can start getting requests soon after you sign up.

SEO is the work of ranking your own website and Google Business Profile so homeowners find you directly when they search. The lead comes straight to you. No marketplace in the middle.

Cost

Angi does not publish one price list. Its own help page says lead cost depends on project size, location, and type. Contractor-reported figures put most leads around $15 to $85 each, plus a membership of about $300 a year.

The price per lead is not your true cost, though. Angi says you are charged for a Market Match or Exact Match lead whether or not you open or respond to it. Add the leads you bid on and lose to other companies. Then divide your monthly spend by jobs actually won, not leads received. That cost per booked job is the number that tells you if Angi is paying off.

With SEO, you pay for the work that earns the ranking, not a marketplace’s price on every request. The cost comes first, and the payoff builds over time.

Lead quality and exclusivity

This is the biggest difference. Angi leads are often shared, which means you are racing other pest control companies and often competing on price.

SEO leads come to you alone. A homeowner who searched “exterminator near me,” landed on your site, and called you is talking to you, not comparing four quotes. That changes the whole conversation. It matters even more when you are selling a recurring plan. Quarterly pest control runs about $100 to $300 per visit, which works out to roughly $400 to $1,200 a year from one customer who stays.

Who owns the result

When you stop paying Angi, the leads stop that day. You have built nothing you keep.

SEO builds an asset. Your rankings, your content, and your reviews stay with your business. It is the difference between renting and owning.

SEO is slower, so be honest with yourself about the timeline. For our client Mack Pest Solutions in Greenville, SC, the average Google position for “pest control Greenville SC” went from #19 (June to October 2025) to #9 (August to October 2026). You can see the full numbers in the Mack Pest Solutions case study.

The honest verdict

Angi is not useless. For speed, for a brand-new pest control company with no online presence, or for filling a slow month, it can earn its keep. The mistake is treating it as your whole plan. That keeps you on a treadmill, competing on price for shared leads.

What I recommend to most pest control companies: use marketplaces like Angi to bridge the gap while you build SEO, then lean on them less as your own channels take over. We compare the other big marketplaces too, in HomeAdvisor vs SEO and Thumbtack vs SEO, and lay out the full picture in our pest control marketing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are Angi leads worth it for pest control companies?
They can be worth it when you need calls fast, like when you are new or in a slow stretch. The drawbacks: a Market Match lead can be sent to up to four pros, and you are charged for it whether or not you open it, respond, or win the job. When you stop paying, the leads stop.
Is SEO better than Angi for a pest control company?
For long-term growth, SEO is usually the better bet because the leads come straight to you instead of being split with other companies, and your rankings stay with your website. Angi is faster to turn on, but you are renting access to leads that are often shared. A sensible plan is to use Angi short term while you build SEO.
How much do Angi leads cost for pest control companies?
Angi does not publish a price list. Its help pages say lead cost depends on project size, location, and type. Contractor-reported figures put most leads around $15 to $85 each, plus a membership of about $300 a year. Because leads are often shared, your real cost per booked job is higher than the price per lead.
